Bank of Hawaii reopens Kohala branch

Bank of Hawaii reopened its Kohala branch on the Big Island Tuesday, after a year of repairs and structural renovations.

The historic branch had been closed after the earthquake in October 2006. In the interim, the bank used a large mobile trailer to meet service needs for the community.

The original building was built in 1900 and bought by the Bank of Hawaii in 1922.

The renovated building includes a photovoltaic system from Hoku Scientific, making the building energy self-sufficient.

City office cleaners take to the street for higher wages

Commercial office cleaners who work at some of Baltimore's largest buildings were set to rally Tuesday for a new contract.

The workers belong to Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ. Contract talks began Nov. 15 between Local 32BJ and major commercial cleaning companies that serve most of the area's office buildings. The contract would cover 700 Baltimore employees, 1,500 in Montgomery County and 4,500 in Washington, D.C. The major local cleaning contractors include Red Coats Inc., American Building Maintenance and Unicco, SEIU said in a news release.

The workers say they are seeking a fair wage increase.

The Baltimore rally was set to begin at 4:30 p.m. outside the Bank of America building at 100 S. Charles St. The cleaners said in a news release that they are prepared to go on strike if they feel it becomes necessary. Their current contract expires at midnight on New Year's Eve.

Last week, Local 32BJ workers in New York and New Jersey authorized the union's bargaining committee to call for a strike if their pay demands are not met.

SEIU Local 32BJ has more than 85,000 members in six states, including 9,000 in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Local 32BJ's Baltimore buildings include the Legg Mason building, Bank of America building, Candler building and 100 E. Pratt St.

Ohio Wesleyan names 16th president

Ohio Wesleyan University has chosen an executive at a private Arkansas liberal arts college to head the Central Ohio college.

The university has hired Rockwell "Rock" Jones as its 16th president. Jones, 49, is executive vice president and dean of advancement at Hendrix College in Conway, Ark.

He will step into the Ohio Wesleyan job in July.

His selection ends a months-long search that netted nine interviewed candidates and three finalists.

Jones succeeds Mark W. Huddleston, who resigned this year from the 1,900-student Delaware school to become president of the University of New Hampshire. Huddleston had spent three years as president before stepping down.

Jones arrived at Hendrix, where he had received a bachelor's degree, as chaplain in 1995 and later became vice president for enrollment and dean of admissions and financial aid, a post he held until 2001. As executive vice president and dean of advancement for six years, he developed a $100 million capital campaign for the 1,100-student school that is nearly three-quarters completed.

Jones also holds a Ph.D in education administration from the University of Texas and a master's of divinity from Duke University.
